Overview
Is your pet struggling to walk, showing signs of pain, or experiencing paralysis? They might be dealing with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a common spinal condition in dogs and cats. Let's break down what IVDD is and how we can help your pet feel better.
What Is IVDD?
IVDD occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae of your pet's spine deteriorate, bulge, or burst. This can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, nerve damage, and sometimes paralysis. Think of the discs like shock absorbers; when they fail, the entire system is affected.
Understanding Recovery Chances
It's important to understand that not all cases of paralysis caused by IVDD can be reversed. Recovery largely depends on:
Conscious Proprioception (CP): This is your pet's ability to recognize the position of their limbs without looking. If your pet still has CP, the chances of recovery are higher.
Deep Pain Reflex: The ability to feel deep pain in the affected limbs. If this reflex is present, it indicates that the spinal cord is still functioning to some degree, improving the likelihood of recovery.
Age of Injury: Recent injuries have a better chance of reversal. The sooner treatment begins after the onset of symptoms, the better the prognosis.
Which Pets Are More Prone to IVDD?
Breeds at Risk: Dachshunds, Beagles and Shih Tzus are especially prone due to their long backs and body structure.
Age Factor: Middle-aged to older pets are more susceptible, but IVDD can occur at any age.
Overweight Pets: Extra weight puts additional strain on the spine.
Genetic Predisposition: Some pets inherit a higher risk for IVDD.
